FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
E
ach year, The Call releases an issue centralized around local charities and the charitable actions of people in the Kirkwood community. COVID-19 has altered how people live - which is why we felt it was especially important to continue the tradition of releasing such an issue this year; we wanted to highlight how, despite the turmoil brought on by the pandemic, people and organizations in the community have continued their charitable work. Features writer Nicholas Whittington's story "Connections that serve," for example, spotlights Caritas Connections, an organization operating in and around Kirkwood which provides resources to charities they can then distribute to their beneficiaries. The story expatiates how Caritas Connections works collaboratively with local charities to strengthen those charities' work in their communities. In opinions writer Sim Khanuja's profile of Ready Readers, "The power of literacy," we're able to see how one charity kindles connections between themselves and their community. Ready Readers works to enhance the literacy of children in the St. Louis area. Khanuja details the ways in which the charity has adapted to ever- changing life situations in the pandemic. Also included in this issue is Helping Hands, which was inspired by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's "100 neediest cases." These stories profile anonymous KHS families who are currently in need. At the end of each story, there is a list of items that the family is requesting be donated, so we implore any community members who are currently able to donate to do so. These donations can be dropped offin the South Journalism building of KHS. And, although steadfast in our desire to create the Charity Issue, our staff also recognized that the manifold lifestyle changes caused by the pandemic might be reason to focus further on what this issue is about: giving back. Rather than printing the Charity Issue, TKC has decided to donate the funds which would have otherwise been appropriated for that purpose to the families featured in the Helping Hands stories. We hope you enjoy reading through this issue.
