lmost everyone remembers their freshman year of high school as chaotic, and the class of 2024 is starting even more memorably by going virtual. We wanted to give this year's freshmen a back to school issue as unique as their unusual first day of school. Straying from our normal back to school coverage of summer vacation and current events, we compiled a complete survival guide with everything freshmen will need to excel at KHS. This issue will give you the low-down on the best spots on campus, which clubs to join and which school traditions are worth the hype. Stories include advice from seniors and Dr. Michael Havener, principal, alongside lighthearted pieces like "Dear Incoming Freshmen..." by Kailey Shirrell and "Getting Involved" by Nathan Sweeney. When writing my story, Welcome to Webster," I took a satirical approach to make even the upperclassmen laugh, while reminding everyone that even during a global pandemic, Kirkwood is superior to Webster. Our writers and visual staffers worked together to give this issue a scholastic and humorous feel, hoping to raise the spirits of everyone disappointed by COVID-19's impact on learning. We also tried to capture the spirit of Kirkwood and put the school's personality right into the pages of this issue to give freshmen an idea of what to expect. This issue should feel like a "welcome back" and "welcome to Kirkwood." After several long days of writing and designing from home, TKC staffis excited to bring to you our first issue of the year, which almost feels like we're back at KHS. Designed for the freshmen, but worth the read for every class, we thought this specialty back to school issue would be the perfect way to start the year. Class of '24, this one's for you.
